To mark the availability of the new A Series, ADAM Audio and Sonarworks have unveiled details of their studio monitors collaboration, the successors to the award-winning AX Series.

The ADAM Audio A Series delivers highly accurate, transparent sound across a full line of monitors. The line also includes a wealth of voicing and room adaptation options that can be controlled remotely and in real time via A Control, a free-to-download software application from ADAM Audio (available for Windows and MacOS). A Control also facilitates a highly anticipated feature of the series, delivered in collaboration with calibration experts Sonarworks.  Via A Control, users can upload and store SoundID Reference calibration profiles directly on the DSP of A Series monitors without the need to run the SoundID Reference application or any additional DAW plugin.

Technology & Benefits

Each A Series monitor contains an embedded platform on the loudspeakers’ DSP that can host calibration profiles created in SoundID Reference. This powerful software measures the acoustics of your space and generates a unique calibration to help counteract problematic frequencies and resonances. Typically, this calibration profile requires a VST or the SoundID Reference application to run, contributing to CPU usage and latency. The A Series integration nullifies CPU usage and significantly reduces latency by storing the calibration profiles directly on the loudspeakers’ DSP. Once transferred to the speaker, you can continue to benefit from the SoundID Reference calibration without the need for any software or network cables – a great example of the “set and forget” philosophy.

Extended 60-day Trial

ADAM Audio and Sonarworks have shared details of an extended 60-day SoundID Reference trial for A Series customers. The trial license is available to A Series customers who register their speakers in the MyADAM area of adam-audio.com.

It offers the full functionality of SoundID Reference, including the ability to export calibration profiles so they can be imported to A Control and transferred to the loudspeakers’ DSP. A Series customers will be provided with the license by email by the team at ADAM Audio. A measurement microphone is required to perform the measurements necessary to create the calibration profile in SoundID Reference.

A Control

ADAM Audio A Control is a key component in this innovative collaboration. Designed internally by ADAM Audio, the free-of-charge application provides A Series customers with a modern speaker management and equalisation system. As well as facilitating the transfer of SoundID Reference calibration profiles to the loudspeakers, users can also create their own calibration profiles across 6 bands of parametric equalisation or make changes to the voicing and room adaptation settings found on the backplate. All changes made in A Control can be heard in real-time from the listening position, allowing users to be confident in their equalisations and toggle between uncalibrated and calibrated audio.  A tutorial video can be viewed below.

As reported back in April, ADAM Audio, the studio monitor company that is now part of the British conglomerate Focusrite Group, announced the launch of a complete new range of studio monitors, with a total of 5 models. The new A Series is the successor of the original and most popular designs from the Berlin-based company, now adding rotatable HPS waveguides for the company’s X-ART tweeter, DSP-based room correction and voicing with remote control software. The most significant innovation is the DSP-integration of automated room correction in partnership with Sonarworks.

ADAM Audio is the latest studio brand to partner with the Latvian company on an automated room correction solution that runs directly on the DSP of the A Series monitors. This allows the speakers to adjust to multipurpose environments in which people currently create music, such as a bedroom or living room where acoustic treatment is often not an option.

Using the A Control software, users can push advanced filters directly to an embedded platform onboard the monitors to help compensate for imperfect room acoustics, and this platform supports filters from Sonarworks. Using Sonarworks SoundID Reference software and a measurement microphone, users can create calibration curves specifically for their room and run them directly on A Series monitors.

Prices for ADAM Audio A Series monitors:

Product EUR GBP USD
A4V 449 € £ 379 $ 499
A44H 649 € £ 549 $ 699
A7V 699 € £ 599 $ 799
A77H 1.299 € £ 1.099 $ 1,299
A8H 1.599 € £ 1.359 $1,499

The Focusrite Group, which comprises the Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Novation and Ampify Music brands, has acquired leading studio monitor company, ADAM Audio GmbH of Berlin, Germany.

It marks the first acquisition for The Focusrite Group since going public in 2014.

“I am delighted that we have an important new addition to our family of brands. For the Focusrite Group, the creation and recording of music is everything,” said Focusrite founder and chairman Phil Dudderidge. “With a vision to create the most holistic creative experience for recording professionals and musicians alike, choosing the right high-precision studio monitor brand is key. Together with ADAM Audio we can achieve so much more, removing the technical barriers that frustrate artists seeking to record and reveal their true sound.”

Tim Carroll, CEO of the Focusrite Group, added: “ADAM Audio is undeniably a leader in the field of electroacoustics. The A7Xs and S3s have become standards in recording spaces across the globe. Even so, I know the team have no interest in resting on their laurels. We need to ensure they receive all the support they require to continue raising the sonic bar.

“That our two companies are so aligned from a cultural perspective reassures me that, as we increasingly work together, great things will happen. With so much expertise between us in acoustics, sound reproduction, DSP, Audio-over-IP and control, the opportunities are abundant to refine recording and production workflows together.”

ADAM Audio will continue to operate out of their main offices in Berlin, Germany, under the leadership of Christian Hellinger, who commented:

“What a perfect beginning for the next chapter of our great company’s story. I’m so proud of what the ADAM Audio team has achieved over the past 20 years, and can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together with the Focusrite Group in our 3rd decade of creating future-oriented innovative professional monitoring and loudspeaker technologies.”

ADAM Audio has announced availability of the T10S, its latest compact active 10′′ subwoofer equipped with a 130-Watt, Class D amplifier designed to extend the bass response of the company’s T Series studio monitor speakers.

Incorporating high-quality, low-noise OP amps, the T10S has been designed to offer clean, contoured bass response that maintains the sonic integrity of audio passing through the sub to the monitor speakers.

The switchable crossover frequency and optional crossover bypass allows the T10S to be used with the ADAM Audio T Series or any other professional monitor, including surround setups. Additional features include a phase invert switch and intelligent auto-power system.

Its compact dimensions give the T10S one of the smallest footprints of any 10″ subwoofer designs currently available, while its generously proportioned rear-facing bass reflex port is optimised for airflow to minimise noise, even under heavy load. The housing incorporates four high-grade rubber feet that prevent the sound from exciting the floor.

“We’re excited to take this next step for our T series range,” said Christian Hellinger, CEO at ADAM Audio. “Developing the T10S subwoofer felt a lot like the design process for our T7V and T5V full-range monitors in that were we totally focused on channeling all our experience into producing a highly affordable speaker. Many producers working on more budget-friendly setups like the T Series require an accurate depiction of how the bass will translate in clubs and other venues with a sub. This small yet potent subwoofer pushes the sonic envelope all the way down to 28 Hz. We’re very pleased to offer our customers a great- sounding subwoofer priced in line with our T series.”

The recommended retail price for the ADAM T10S is 389 GBP (incl. 20% VAT) / 449 EUR (incl. 19% VAT).

Colby Ramsey speaks to ADAM Audio’s CEO Christian Hellinger about the Berlin-based company’s two decades creating professional studio monitoring solutions…

Tell us about how you first got involved with the company.

I’ve been at the company for two years now, so unfortunately was not here when it started 20 years ago! I guess I’m still kind of the new guy as many of the people here – especially in production – have been working at ADAM Audio for the whole time. Coming to this role from my long-term background in pro audio software, I have certainly learned a lot about how hardware companies operate.

How has the company’s ethos helped it to achieve its goals?

We’re always thinking about designing great products, and are constantly trying to push the limits of what a studio monitor is capable of. I think that’s the general approach of a lot of companies out there. We always try to harness the power of our excellent engineering teams as the key to achieving this goal and driving innovation, although we do often try to approach it from an end user perspective, rather than a technical one. It’s about trying to meet demand while also pushing the boundaries of what musicians, producers and engineers know is possible.

We offer monitoring solutions for a very wide range of budgets and experience levels, which I think makes us rather unique. From the quite methodical T-Series up to our flagship line of S-Series speakers – we are not boutique, and pride ourselves as being the manufacturer of studio monitors that many audio professionals rely on every day. There’s some awesome opportunities, because we are getting in touch with some totally different users out there and we like to follow them through their whole musical journey.

We are toolmakers, who like to get our hands dirty. Knowing what the users need and being able to adjust and develop our products is crucial to stay relevant, so keeping that in mind is more or less part of everything we do. I want to keep the passion going at ADAM Audio by staying very pragmatic and hands-on, while combining this with some very professional processes, structures and supply chains that can shift the company up to the next level.

How would you describe the company’s recent growth trajectory?

ADAM Audio has experienced all kinds of ups and downs. Around four years ago the company went into insolvency and the entire structure significantly changed. We now have investors on board who have made some major decisions in that we’re not doing hi-fi products anymore, and are instead really putting our focus on pro audio and our studio monitors. I think we owe our recent success in pro audio and significant organic growth to that decision.

What our shareholders did was heavily invest their time, effort and funds into the operations departments; supply chain, logistics, purchase, production etc. They put some solid structures and processes in place to allow for future growth, but still kept the spirit that I mentioned earlier – handmade gear with a lot of passion, based on a professional and reliable company structure.

Why is ADAM Audio’s 20th anniversary so significant for the company, and what are you doing this year to celebrate?

20 years in the audio industry is quite a long time, and we really have experienced it all, from great success to very tough times. The intention and the approach was always about the product and it has remained that way – the company has changed a lot but we still have the same people and the same passion. Because of the changes that took place around four years ago, it feels like the company is still in its early stages, despite being around for 20 years. It almost feels like a bit of a startup where everyone is hungry and excited for the next five years. We’re making progress in every aspect of our business and we want to maintain that.

As we celebrate our 20th anniversary this year, we also want to make it a celebration for our users and our business partners. We are going to be doing special promotions and activities every month, as well as a big party in Berlin for all of our dealers, distributors, staff and their families in the late summer. Under that 20-year banner, we want to do some limited editions of our products and donate any profits raised to some kind of social institution. It’s a big year for us and I can see that people are very proud, especially my colleagues who have been here since the beginning!

We will of course be at Superbooth again this year – it’s a show that’s really focused on the music and the passion. We exhibit there, but more importantly last year we supplied more than 60 per cent of the exhibitors with speakers and supported them. Events like this show that we are a company that wants to be close to the customer, always engaging in conversations with them.

How do you plan to develop your product ranges? Could you offer your thoughts on any particular industry trends that you’re seeing?

While we are always growing and developing our existing product ranges, I think there’s lots of opportunities for us in terms of horizontal growth, and I can see us playing a significant role in other areas of the pro audio environment. Headphones is of course a logical step for us.

We’re seeing so many interesting use cases in terms of immersive audio and Dolby Atmos on the installation side of the business. However, we are a small company compared to some of the others out there, so we have to make sure that we don’t lose our focus. For me, quality over quantity is important.

We’re still really keeping our eye on the move from analogue to digital, which is part of the reason why I came into the company with my software background. The speakers are becoming more and more software based with their big DSP engines, which is an important step for us, especially when it comes to our ideas about the solutions that we provide.

Users want to interact with their speakers and have them connected and embedded. It’s a case of looking at how we can translate the ‘smart home’ of the future into a ‘smart studio.’ We’re always looking left and right to see what else can make us a major player in pro audio aside from speakers, and it’s about trying to balance our core segment with research and development into the next generation of products. There are some extremely exciting times coming up and we’re in our best shape ever at the moment, so I think people are really looking forward to what we have planned for the future.

The SAE Institute Berlin has installed a pair of ADAM Audio S3H mid-field monitors in its “Gold Studio”.

Staff who have taught in this studio – which already houses a 48-channel Neve 88RS console – have praised the new speakers, citing a balanced and detailed sound that is stimulating to work with and “pleasingly punchy”.

Steffen Köhler and Peter Thomas manage the audio engineering department at SAE Berlin: “As soon as students have learned about signal flow and audio processing working with the Pro Tools editing workstations and the Soundcraft mixers, they progress to our studios,” Köhler explained. “We have a digital studio and an analogue studio where students gain their first engineering experience. We also have two post pro studios, a MIDI studio crammed with all kinds of external and internal sound modules, as well as two large control rooms.”

Although neither model is still in production, one of the SAE Berlin studios still features a pair of S3As. “These two speakers have made it through quite a few reconfigurations of the studio space and for many students and staff they are a firmly established part of our campus,” Köhler added. “Because of their characteristics, we often use them at events or master-classes. Time and time again they have proved that they work well in many different environments and situations.”

Originally a “School of Audio Engineering” offering courses for audio engineers, the SAE now offers training for a variety of media environments including audio, video and games as well as other creative industries. The SAE runs a total of 55 sites, with nine of these in Germany.

Berlin’s first SAE Institute was founded over 30 years ago, yet in 2016, it moved to a new campus comprising around 2000m² located in the Kreuzberg area. Here, 400 students from all over the world learn how to produce digital films, program games or create 3D animations, to name just a few of the courses on offer. Audio engineering, sound design and music production professionals of tomorrow also learn their trade at SAE Berlin. Students begin by acquiring the technical basics and learning the fundamentals of acoustics, spending time at mixing desks and exploring DAWs such as Pro Tools, Cubase and Ableton Live.

Berlin-based ADAM Audio is this month celebrating 20 years since it was founded in March 1999.

The company achieved its breakthrough on the international stage with its ADAM S3A active studio monitor, with many still serving faithfully in renowned recording studios.

The A7 (2007) and A7X (2010) models wrote new chapters in the company’s ongoing success story. Among the latest ADAM Audio products is its flagship S series – the first ADAM Audio speakers to feature DSPs.

In 2018, ADAM launched the T series, providing newcomers on a limited budget with the ‘ADAM sound’. In the same year the company also introduced its SP-5 headphones, a mobile professional monitoring solution.

“We’re very happy and, of course, also a bit proud that our studio monitors have been part of countless music productions over the last twenty years,” commented Christian Hellinger, CEO at ADAM Audio. “It’s a challenge – a wonderful and gratifying challenge – to be part of a creative process and to help artists, producers and audio engineers make decisions by providing them with innovative new technology when recording, mixing or mastering their material.

“Our ART tweeter still reveals details, even to experienced audio engineers, that the listener hasn’t heard before,” Hellinger added. “The X-ART and S-ART tweeters are still made by hand at our HQ in Berlin. But they’re far from being the only ADAM Audio innovation. Years of research and development continue to result in future-oriented technologies, such as our new driver concepts, digital signal processing and software solutions.

“The most important driver for our development was and is our excellent team who are passionate about our aspiration to develop, build and distribute the best studio monitors. Our customers have now trusted us for 20 years, showing us that we’re on the right path.”

To celebrate, ADAM Audio has created a limited white edition of its A7X speakers, in a production run totalling just 20 units. This special version will be available through several channels throughout 2019. One pair will be given to the winner of the company’s Instagram competition while another pair will be auctioned via eBay with all proceeds going to the charity Doctors Without Borders.

ADAM Audio has introduced the T10S, a new compact active 10′′ subwoofer.

Equipped with a 130 watt Class D amplifier, the T10S’ frequency response of 32 Hz to 120 Hz is tailored to extend the bass response of ADAM’s T Series studio monitor speakers. An internal adjustable two-channel crossover allows calibration of the bass signal and provides optimal performance of the system.

The T10S subwoofer’s performance, features and connectivity are designed specifically to complement ADAM Audio’s T5V and T7V near field monitors, but it is also able to deliver the same performance with other compact monitoring speakers.

The ADAM Audio T10S will be available in the second quarter of 2019, with a recommended retail price of 399,–$ (US) or 449,–€ incl. 19% VAT (Europe).

Meanwhile, ADAM has announced a partnership with Sonarworks, developers of Reference studio calibration software. The two brands have combined their expertise and plan to unveil new monitoring solutions in the first half of 2019.

“Our international user base is very aware of limitations in their monitoring environments, which in most cases are prohibitively expensive or time consuming to overcome.” said Christian Hellinger, CEO at ADAM Audio. “Through our partnership with Sonarworks, our international customer base will be able to experience our amazing loudspeakers without having to worry about imperfects in their rooms.”

“Fixing the monitoring environment — or ‘the room’ — has always been the biggest obstacle music creators face in achieving reference audio,” added Martins Popelis, co-founder and VP Products, Sonarworks. “By integrating our software expertise with ADAM Audio’s best-in-class monitoring systems, we are set to overcome this challenge — so there is nothing standing in the way of achieving truly reliable, reference sound.”

More details regarding the cooperation between ADAM Audio and Sonarworks will be announced in the near future. In the meantime, visitors to the 2019 NAMM Show are invited to visit Sonarworks at Booth ACC North, 19312 and and ADAM Audio (Booth 84, 85).

ADAM Audio has lifted the veil on the Studio Pro SP-5, the company’s first foray into the professional studio headphone market.

The SP-5 is a closed-backed, ‘analytically precise’ circumaural headphone delivering a smoothly balanced sound across a broad frequency spectrum from 8 Hz to 38 kHz.

The headphone integrates Bavarian company Ultrasone’s S-LOGIC technology, employing transducers spatially arranged to exploit the natural form of the human ear, making mixing on the SP-5 easier than on traditional headphone designs that point directly at the ear canal.

S-LOGIC technology also means the SP-5 require less SPL to deliver the same subjectively experienced volume, reducing distortion artefacts and avoiding listening fatigue.

“We’re very pleased to have worked with such a renowned industry partner to offer our first ADAM Audio headphone,” said ADAM Audio CEO Christian Hellinger. “Our collaboration has produced a headphone that fits perfectly into ADAM Audio’s range of reference-class monitors and follows the same objectives of providing ultra-precise reproduction of audio material while avoiding hearing fatigue.

The ADAM Audio Studio Pro SP-5 is available now for SRP £499 in the UK, MAP $499 in the US, and UVP €549 in Germany.
