Audio-Technica is supporting the host broadcaster of China’s winter sports event with a huge number of microphones, headphones and associated accessories. The company has in fact been providing audio solutions to global broadcasts of such events for some 26 years.

Microphone innovation can be found in the locations where events take place on ice such as speed skating, ice hockey and figure skating. There, approximately 60 pieces of AT880b contact microphone are sunk into the ice fields before being frozen, to pick up the often subtle sound of competitors’ skates.

In order to bring the action of the curling events to viewers at home, there are over 50 channels of ATW-5000 Series wireless belt-pack microphone systems, often working continuously for up to 13 hours per day in challenging environments in terms of temperatures.

A long-running signature of the sports broadcasts is the detail of a venue’s ‘ambient’ sound, delivered in 5.1 surround. This relies on a combination of AT4050 mono and AT4050ST stereo large diaphragm microphones, often hung from high in venues. In total there are over 200 of these ambient microphones throughout the various competition sites.

U851R boundary microphones, in special ‘winter white’ colours, BP899 & BP898 lapel microphones, in-ear E-Series monitors and Mx-Series headphones help complete the extensive inventory delivered by Audio-Technica into the host city of Beijing.

Finally, making a second appearance after their inaugural success in Tokyo last summer, are 14 of Audio-Technica’s prototype 8.0 Microphones. which also form part of the host broadcaster’s immersive audio programme delivery package.

Robotic line array specialist PK Sound has introduced an installation iteration of its Trinity large-format line array element.

The new Trinity Install element is designed to bring the same performance capabilities of the live Trinity system to a variety of installation applications.

Trinity Install’s SPL and clarity can be controlled with variable coverage in both the vertical and horizontal planes. Intelligibility is improved by directing the system’s energy away from reflective surfaces as coverage is adjusted to meet the architectural design of the venue.

“Trinity Install delivers the impact and operational advantages of our flagship array family to high-performance installs in a fixed position, with our sleek, clean, and uncompromising new all-black design,” said Darryl Ross, senior applications support for PK SOUND. “The response from our network and clients so far has been very encouraging, as partners can now offer a solution for concert venues, theatres, nightclubs, houses of worship, and other live event spaces that want the full PK experience for their performers and patrons.”

The vertical angles are set during installation using a fixed rigging system, while horizontal angles are locked into one of 22 symmetric or asymmetric configurations throughout a line source. A combination of FIR and IIR filters are utilised to deliver smooth frequency response in the listening area.

Horn-loaded 12” transducers handle low-frequency response. The mid-frequency band is supported by four 6.5” midrange transducers affixed to the patented Coherent Midrange Integrator (CMI). Two dual-diaphragm high-frequency transducers, paired directly to an integrated planar waveguide, reduce distortion across the high-frequency band. A 6,000 W Class D amplifier enhances headroom while maintaining clear output.

Last month, PK Sound appointed James Oliver as its new chief strategy officer. He joined the company from fellow Canadian loudspeaker manufacturer Adamson.

I really enjoy pushing the boundaries of what is expected from an integrator, and it’s a great feeling to know that as part of Pro Media Audio Video EU we’ll be able to achieve ground-breaking projects together.”

Leamy added: “Pro Media Audio Video was identified as a centre of excellence, having become successful in moving from production into integration. That’s what the group does – we seek out centres of excellence and the people who can promote that.

“We feel it’s of vital importance to understand our services from the perspective of the end user, so we understand what is needed in order to benefit the fan experience. Uniquely, we are able to leverage production people into integration and that’s what we will continue to do.

“Eddie’s own knowledge is extraordinary and he represents another step in the expansion of our existing vision.”

Pro Media Audio Video EU is now fully operational and open for business. It will be expanding its new Business Development team in due course.

ISE 2021 has cancelled its plans to run as an in-person event in Barcelona from June 1-4, with the show now taking the form of ISE Live & Online – a series of regional events in Barcelona, Munich, Amsterdam and London.

The regional events will feature a significant digital offering powered by Cisco.

The decision was made by Integrated Systems Events co-owners AVIXA and CEDIA due to the ongoing uncertainty around COVID-19 restrictions.

ISE managing director Mike Blackman said in a statement: “We have reached this decision following extensive discussions with our exhibitors over the last few months, and more explicitly, these last 10 days. All along there has been a clear demand for a four-day ISE show in Barcelona in June. However, uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and international travel remains, which means we are unable to run ISE 2021 in its traditional format.

You may also be interested in:

“Our exhibitors have made it clear that there is a desire to get the industry together, but on a local level. In response, we are targeting Europe’s key markets across the AV sector and aim to deliver a quality audience who want to meet potential suppliers, existing customers and network with their peers.

“For 2021, we have a rich and exciting digital offering,” Blackman continued. “We are proud to be working with Cisco on this innovative approach. We will be bringing ISE to four cities in June and continuing with our popular RISE Spotlight programme throughout the year. Working with the industry in this way, we will be providing meaningful opportunities for sales teams to meet their customers, for people to experience product innovations, and of course, for networking.”

ISE Live & Online will run in a roadshow format as follows:

1-2 June, Fira Barcelona (Tue/Wed)
8-9 June, MAC Forum, Munich (Tue / Wed)
15-16 June, RAI, Amsterdam (Tue/Wed)
23-24 June, Evolution, Battersea, London (Wed/Thurs)

“Covid has taught us all to listen more attentively,” added David Labuskes, AVIXA CEO. “Listen to our neighbours, our family, our co-workers, our customers and our market.  I believe this approach reflects what we’ve heard, a strong desire for prudent and safe face-to-face gatherings that can reinforce business connections and initiate growth.  We are honoured to be in a position to offer these to our community.”

Giles Sutton, joint CEO of CEDIA, said, “Everyone in the industry is missing the human interaction that is such a vital part of our industry – the opportunity not just to see, hear and touch new products and innovations in our sector but also everything that ISE brings in terms of learning, networking and that all important sense of community. The ISE team has worked tirelessly to ensure that guidelines could be in place to protect our exhibitors and visitors on-site.

“However, there remains uncertainty around current travel restrictions and the ability for our global audience to take part in person. The success of ISE has been built on broad industry support and that is the reason why we have taken these decisions this week.  We look forward to a debut show where our community can all be together again in Barcelona in February 2022.”

German loudspeaker giant d&b audiotechnik has completed its first ever KSL Soundscape installation at Taiwan’s new Kaohsiung Music Center.

Located in Kaohsiung, the newly developed venue comprises of a vast outdoor stage HI-BREEZE Square, four auditoriums and a large main stage, HI-ING Hall. The final auditorium is located outside of the building on top of the bridge overlooking the Love River. Like the auditoriums, the main stage can be subdivided into smaller units, offering greater flexibility in its hosting capabilities. As well s serving as a tourist attraction, the venue will primarily feature live music and concerts.

The Kaohsiung City Government worked with audio professionals and a consultant to design and specify a future-proof sound reinforcement system, identifying d&b Soundscape as the ideal fit.

The Kaohsiung Music Center, along with supplier Topsound, combined d&b Soundscape immersive technology, and d&b KSL loudspeakers to create a first-of-its-kind installation. The venue features seven hangs of KSL line arrays (five for the mains, and two for outfills) to provide full-band directivity control to the space. The system is powered by the DS100 Signal Engine, an audio system processor based on a Dante-enabled signal matrix.

Also key to the installation is d&b’s En-Scene technology – a sound object positioning software tool that enables the individual placement and movement of sound objects. It depicts stage scenarios so that each sound object corresponds both visually and acoustically.

“This venue is unique, not just in its design and construction but also because of its ability to accommodate audiences of all sizes,” said Kenny Liu, general manager of Topsound. “The combination of KSL and Soundscape has been revolutionary and provides the coverage we need to ensure every spectator has the same sound experience, whether they situated right at the front or in the back corner.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the d&b team was unable to be onsite during the installation. Instead, they provided the Topsound teams with a series of virtual training webinars.

“We were supported by d&b every step of the way, and their online training initiatives taught us so much and ensured we felt extremely comfortable with the system,” commented Liu. “This is an extremely impressive looking venue, and we needed a sound system that would match, d&b gave us that and more, and we are very excited for audiences to experience this one of a kind system in a one of a kind venue.”

The installation completion marks the latest in a series of firsts for the German pro audio company. Last month, d&b audiotechnik announced the launch of its new subscription service.

The service is designed to enable venue owners to upgrade their audio offering with a brand new d&b audiotechnik system without a large, upfront capital investment. The standard d&b Subscription Series plan offers customers the flexibility of a monthly payment and commitment periods as short as 24 months. The subscription fee covers all hardware, including accessories, system commissioning, post-install services, maintenance, and decommissioning.

This announcement was preceded by the news that the company was rolling out an e-commerce platform dubbed d&b Direct. d&b CEO Amnon Harman spoke to Audio Media International about the new platform and what it means for the business in a world exclusive interview, which can be read here.

Integrated Systems Events has reconfirmed its commitment to staging ISE 2021 as a live show in Barcelona this June, following a review of the COVID-19 situation. The pro AV expo will run June 1-2, at the Fira de Barcelona, Gran Vía.

ISE MD Mike Blackman cites the rapid implementation of vaccines, and the current reduction in daily new cases, as a positive trend that will enable ISE to take place as an in-person event. However he concedes that current attitudes to travel may mean a lower volume of attendance than in previous years.

Reflecting this, the show will run with a full supporting digital programme agenda.

Blackman has also floated the idea of bringing a localised regional version of the show to Germany, the Netherlands and the UK, “taking ISE on the road for those who may not be able to make it to Barcelona.” This would be a first for organisers, and has piqued industry interest.

“It’s certainly an interesting idea,” Keziah Newlove, marketing manager at Amina Technologies, told Audio Media International. “We hadn’t heard of this before. The ability to have multiple touchpoints with our customers is always beneficial. There probably has to be a very radical change in the format to focus more on relationships and less on expensive and environmentally wasteful stand building. That would be a positive change.”

“For us at Amina, the most important factor is the safety of our staff.  We are really excited to finally have face to face meetings, however, at the moment it just feels too soon.  I think if it was a month or too later it would have been much better timing. In person is always going to be our preference, however the timing does have to be right, and across Europe the vaccination process doesn’t seem to be far enough along.”

Newlove adds: “If it is safe, and our staff are vaccinated and want to go to ISE this year, we will send a small team to meet with our partners and customers on the ISE floor.”

David Evans, director of Cambridge-based Node Audio Research, told us: “Localised or regional events could be a good idea to begin with. There would be more control, with regard to safety measures.  It’s difficult to predict the outlook for the rest of the year, but we remain positive, that live shows and trade exhibitions will return soon.”

“It seems ISE is trying to do everything they can, to ensure the correct safety measures are in place for the event. There are currently many travel restrictions around the world, so it will certainly still have an effect on any live events and shows.”

Of course, it remains to be seen if a semi-virtual trade show, as also mooted by Integrated Systems Europe for ISE 2021, can really be successful.

You may also be interested in:

Chris Mcintyre-Brown. Pro AV analyst and Associate Director at Futuresource Consulting, told Audio Media International:  “It really depends on how we define success. Learning from CES earlier in the year, attendance and engagement from exhibitors would clearly be limited. Online fatigue is also clearly creeping into the events business, as well as our daily lives, which would be another contributing factor. However, the ISE team has done a great job building an engaging conference program in recent years which I could see transitioning with more success into the virtual world.”

The show has suffered a serious setback following reports that Samsung, one of ISE’s biggest exhibitors, has pulled out, citing health and travel concerns.

Reacting to the development, Tom Garrett, International Sales manager for Trinnov Audio told Audio Media International:  “With the 2021 edition of ISE looking more and more unlikely, as additional big names pull out, it’s sad to say that AV professionals will be missing out on much needed networking opportunities and knowledge enhancement that only a big trade show can deliver which cannot be easily replicated in the virtual environment.”

Italian amplification specialist Powersoft is rolling out Dynamic Music Distribution, a new technology that allows system integrators to scale inputs and zones with the dynamic routing capabilities embedded on its fixed install amplifier platforms.

Powersoft Dynamic Music Distribution is designed to simplify the process of sharing variable music sources locally and/or between different zones in small/medium-sized venues independently from the source location, and carry control signals in an automated fashion – all without the need of a centralised DSP. As such, all inputs can be shared over the network as Dante signal.

User interfaces will enable integrators to obtain control of the entire system in background and foreground dynamic music distribution applications. This functionality is especially suited to bars and restaurants, hospitality, retail, and fitness applications.

German loudspeaker giant d&b audiotechnik has today (March 3) launched the d&b Subscription Series – an ‘alternative to ownership’ aimed at making the company’s solutions available to a wider range of venues.

The d&b Subscription Series enables venue owners to upgrade their audio offering with a brand new d&b system without a large, upfront capital investment.

“We’ve been working closely with our customers to understand their changing needs and it’s clear that technical flexibility and commercial accessibility are highly valued,” said Amnon Harman, CEO d&b audiotechnik. “Our new Subscription-Series gives any venue owner or manager who aspires to offer the best sound experience access to d&b solutions. The world has changed, buying behaviour has changed, and it’s critical that we address these new needs.”

The standard d&b Subscription Series plan offers customers the flexibility of a monthly payment and commitment periods as short as 24 months. The subscription fee covers all hardware, including accessories, system commissioning, post-install services, maintenance, and decommissioning.

At the end of the subscription period, customers can choose to continue their subscription, upgrade or adjust the system requirements, or cancel the service. The d&b sales partner and dealer network come as part of the package.

In addition to the d&b Subscription-Series, the company is also offering a pay-per-use option. The add-on option enables customers to install additional d&b equipment for use at occasional events. Venues are charged when the enhanced system components are actually used.

The d&b Subscription Series is available in the US, Europe (incl. UK), Singapore, Australia and New Zealand from today.

“At d&b we have the mission to accurately transfer passions,” Harman continued. “We know that extraordinary sound enhances and shapes extraordinary experiences and that’s what our systems deliver. Subscription-Series will make our premium solutions even more accessible for all kinds of installation projects, no matter the size, budget or application.”

Last month, d&b announced the launch of its new d&b Direct e-commerce platform. Available from now to customers in Austria, Germany and the UK, d&b Direct is designed to provide a faster and more efficient way for customers to access the company’s solutions and allow d&b to interact with customers in a more targeted and personalised way. The online platform can present system configuration examples for installation sector buyers and is supported by a streamlined inquiry functionality that connects customers directly with a partner.

In an exclusive interview with Audio Media International, Harman said: We’re always listening to our customers and we came to the realisation that many of them are looking to access great advice and premium solutions faster than we’ve been able to offer in the past. We also recognise that some touring users looking for smaller systems find the idea of buying a system package online really appealing.

“The platform doesn’t just benefit our customers, we also have our eye on how we could strengthen our position as one the leading business partners in pro audio. The d&b Direct platform is part of that mission, simplifying how partners can interact with potential customers and opening up conversations with new customers.”

QSC EMEA regional director, Northern Europe, Duncan Savage, has spoken to Audio Media International about the US pro audio firm’s recent distribution restructure for the European market.

The company has overhauled ts distribution model for its installation business in the Nordic countries, moving from a single regional distribution approach to a country-specific model.

Audiovision AB will become the exclusive distributor in Sweden, with Benum Norway AS appointed exclusive distributor for Norway. In Finland, Denmark, and Iceland, QSC will establish direct distribution working with selected in-country integrators. The arrangement with current distributor for the entire Nordic region, EM Nordic, will conclude on June 30, 2021.

Here, Savage gives Audio Media International the inside track on QSC’s distribution strategy…

What was the strategy behind the new distribution arrangement for the Nordic countries?
We started QSC EMEA in summer 2017 and have dedicated teams supporting the market in Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria and the Netherlands. This enables us to better meet customer expectations in Europe and to provide our sales partners in the region with significantly stronger support.

With regard to the Nordic countries, in the past we worked with a single distributor who was responsible for the entire region. Considering the diversity of these countries, their geographic and market structures we decided to provide individual, country specific approach. Starting with our newly appointed distributors; Audiovision AB and Benum Norway AS, we have found extremely well aligned partners for Sweden and Norway, respectively. In Finland, Denmark and Iceland, we will work directly with selected system integrators and consultants.

You may also be interested in:

Why did you select these particular partners?
QSC is a technology company at the forefront of network-based audio, video and control technology targeting Corporate, Higher-Education and Entertainment sectors; to name just a few.  When selecting a new partner it is key to ensure these organisations share mutual values and visions for the future, this is characterised by their close contact with the market, high levels of AV/IT expertise and the benefits of sharing this knowledge through training and development.

How important is the Nordic region for QSC’s business?
The Nordics are an important region for QSC, not only because of their overall economic strength, but also because of their speed of adaptation of technical innovation. Together with our partners, we will be implementing exciting installation projects in the region.

What are your key markets in the Nordic countries?
One of the benefits of the Q-SYS ecosystem is that it can be applied to many applications with the selection of the suitable Q-SYS peripheral. We see our success in the region by providing the right support and technology solutions to the most competent integrators providing services to multiple vertical markets.

What are your plans for this territory throughout the rest of 2021?
You can understand the distribution realignment as a strategic investment. As described above, the Nordic countries are of great importance to us and are a key building block in our efforts to leverage the huge potential for QSC in the EMEA region.

d&b audiotechnik has introduced a number of new features to its Soundscape immersive audio technology.

The new software updates are designed to improve ease of implementation and offer greater flexibility and predictability in performance.

The En-Scene object-based positioning software has been updated with sound object routing control, which brings individual level adjustment and mute for each sound object within each section (Function Group) of a loudspeaker system, such as mains, front fill, outfill. This option adds flexibility for a wide range of acoustic settings and audience areas. This update also ensures that a sound designer or mixer has complete control over the imaging and sound object performance as they relate to each Function Group in a distributed or immersive system.

Meanwhile, En-Scene has received two new function group modes in the form of ‘delay line embedded’ and ‘outfill embedded’. These address the growing number of installations that use delay lines for the audience areas within a surround (360) Soundscape setup. These 360 set ups use these delay lines either to distribute a higher number of small loudspeakers, or to enable immersive sound for larger audience areas.

Elsewhere, the En-Space room emulation software now fully supports delay lines delivering room emulation on all loudspeaker function groups in a Soundscape system. The impulse response (IR) assignment has been optimised for simultaneous use of multiple instances of the same function group mode [e.g. Delay line] within one loudspeaker system. This development is deisgned to make it easier to use En-Space in a wider range of applications with multiple delay lines, from theatres with several balconies to large open-air events.

“At d&b we are planning ahead and ensuring the Soundscape platform is not only easy to deploy and accessible, but significantly advanced for when it’s possible to have events again,” said Georg Stummer, product manager, d&b audiotechnik. “The features released today not only significantly increase the predictability and flexibility of Soundscape, but also the ease of implementation from small theatre productions to large, complex applications. We are constantly driven by customer feedback and these updates reflect the markets leading requests, ensuring we can further embed Soundscape as the industry standard in immersive sound and deliver further capabilities to our customers creative endeavours.

“These latest Soundscape software updates are a significant step forward for designing and installing Soundscape systems. They ensure this immersive technology is designed to cater to the large variety of applications and audiences we expect to see at socially-distanced events this summer season and well into the future.”

Last week, Audio Media International exclusively revealed that d&b audiotechnik was introducing a brand new e-commerce platform under the banner d&b Direct. You can read our interview with CEO Amnon Harman here, in which he discusses what the new direct initiative means for the business.
