Shure has unveiled TwinPlex, its new line of premium subminiature (5mm) omnidirectional lavalier and headset microphones, at the 2019 NAB Show.

TwinPlex is designed to stand up to the toughest conditions, and provide natural audio at both high and low frequencies for theatre, broadcast, film and television, and corporate presentations.

TwinPlex consists of four lavaliers (TL45, TL46, TL47, TL48) and an ultra-light, fully-adjustable headset microphone (TH53) in multiple colours with extensive accessories and options. The dual-diaphragm omnidirectional design is said to yield “extraordinary” off-axis consistency and low self-noise for lifelike vocal clarity and warmth.

To simulate years of intense use, the ultra-thin, TwinPlex cable was flexed, stretched, and pulled to the absolute limit in internal tests. Available in 1.1 mm and 1.6 mm options, the paintable cables are immune to kinks and memory effects, resulting in superior flex performance thanks to a spiral construction with redundant shielding.

“The mics just lay flat, and they lay flat every time and for the whole length of the run,” said theatre sound engineer Zoe Milton. “Whether we were trying to place the mics in a wig, or another discreet part of the costume, there were no kinks. They did exactly what you wanted them to do, which was fantastic.”

“In developing TwinPlex, we gathered valuable input from leading industry professionals at every stage of the process and extensively tested prototypes to ensure we were ready,” stated John Born, senior global product manager at Shure. “This resulted in a comprehensive portfolio of more than 60 versions in a variety of colour, connector, cable, frequency response, and sensitivity to meet the demands of any application when you need amazing sound quality and unprecedented durability.”

Select models of TwinPlex are now available. For more details, please visit Shure at the 2019 NAB Show (Central Hall #C6015) or go to www.shure.com.

Studio Technologies will showcase a number of new products targeted for broadcast and related applications at NAB 2019 (Booth C7049).

A highlight is the Model 348 Intercom Station, which offers eight talk-and-listen audio channels that can be configured for intercom, talent cueing (IFB) and REMI/At-Home applications.

Using Dante Audio over Ethernet network technology, the desktop unit offers extensive resources in a compact table-top enclosure. It is designed for traditional sports and news broadcasting, live event, corporate AV, theatre, and eSports applications.

“Broadcasters within the NAB community require flexible resources that will support their exact needs,” said Gordon Kapes, president of Studio Technologies. “Being ‘close’ just isn’t acceptable. The Model 348 with its highly-targeted set of audio inputs, audio outputs, and numerous operating modes can be easily configured to play a highly-effective role in allowing on-air talent and production personnel to do their best work.”

Eight rotary controls with integral RGB LEDs allow monitoring of the eight Dante audio input channels. Two additional controls allow adjustment of the headphone and monitor speaker outputs. Pushbutton switches provide the user with talk control. The Model 348 is compatible with both intercom-style and personal computer gaming headsets. A gooseneck microphone can be connected as an alternate talk audio source. In addition to an internal speaker, two Dante monitor output channels can be used for external audio signal monitoring.

Two Gigabit Ethernet connections allow the Model 348 to support both switched and redundant Dante operation. Power for the unit can be supplied by Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or an external source of 12 volts DC.

All Model 348 operating parameters are configured using the Studio Technologies’ STcontroller software application. When the unit is combined with other Dante-supporting products from Studio Technologies, a wide range of intercom, talent cueing, and audio monitoring applications can be supported.

“While many applications share a common set of intercom, IFB, or monitoring needs, it’s the details that impact the overall satisfaction that can be achieved. In the end, every event or production will have its own set of requirements, and almost all will require something unique or special,” added Kapes. “We designed the Model 348 with this in mind, creating a product that’s capable of meeting the needs of whatever is encountered. Our goal is to allow our user’s to create solutions that meet or exceed what’s required – in the end that’s the rewarding part for us.”

Lawo will demonstrate new features and capabilities of Power Core, its AoIP mixing engine and I/O node, at the upcoming NAB Show in Las Vegas.

Initially introduced as a DSP mixing engine and modular I/O system for Ruby radio consoles, many broadcasters are using Power Core as a gateway between legacy audio formats and standards-based IP media networks.

The ST2110-30 standard ensures ‘seamless’ interoperability of audio and video equipment in combined radio/TV broadcast plants.

Power Core features new at NAB include:

– A Dante card with dual-redundant ports and sample rate conversion, allowing easy integration of pro-audio equipment into broadcast environments.

– Dual-redundant front-panel SFP ports for AoIP. Now, broadcasters have their choice of optical or copper network connections, sans the cost of external media converters.

– ST2022-7 Seamless Protection Switching, which provides dual-redundant AoIP network connections. Twin active links guard against audio loss should one link be interrupted.

“Power Core packs a staggering amount of DSP and modular I/O into only 1RU,” said Lawo radio marketing specialist Clark Novak. “On the front panel alone, there are 128 dual-redundant AES67 streams and 128 dual-redundant MADI channels. Then there are eight rear-panel expansion slots. Combine this with 96 DSP channels and nearly 2,000 routing crosspoints, and it’s no wonder radio and TV stations are finding that Power Core increases capabilities, simplifies infrastructure and reduces costs. It’s a win-win!”

Power Core’s eight rear-panel card slots allow a la carte addition of analogue, AES3, MADI and Dante interfaces, and a unique Studio I/O card that provides mic inputs and headphone and monitor outputs.

Visitors to NAB can see Power Core, along with the entire line of advanced Lawo radio, TV and live-sound products, at NAB 2019, April 6-11, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth #N2503.

Calrec Audio will be showcasing its latest virtualised solutions at NAB 2019, including its VP2 headless mixing system, the RP1 2U rackmount broadcasting mixing system, and its modular IP-based system, Type R.

The VP2 virtualised mixing system has no physical control surface and utilises Calrec’s Assist software for setup and control. VP2’s 4U core comes in three DSP sizes; 128, 180 and 240 input channels and incorporates the company’s Hydra2 networking solution. Calrec Serial Control Protocol (CSCP) can allow the audio console to be completely controlled by an automation system.

Meanwhile, RP1 is a broadcast mixing system in a 2U rackmount box, containing Calrec’s Bluefin2 processing. Calrec’s RP1 is designed to provide solutions to three major challenges in remote production workflows – latency, transport and control. On-board DSP enables the generation of monitor mixes and IFBs onsite with no latency, Hydra2 interfaces provide a mechanism to output audio in a variety of formats and Calrec’s True Control gives an operator in a remote studio direct control over channel functions.

Finally, Type R is a modular, expandable, IP-based mixing system, which utilises standard networking technology and combines it with configurable soft panels that can be tailored to operator needs. It provides simple customisation across established networks, open control protocols and surface personalisation. Type R can be used without a physical surface with control and setup via Calrec’s browser-based Assist application and is fully compatible with automated systems using CSCP.

Calrec and its latest virtualised solutions can be found on Booth C7408 at NAB 2019.

At NAB, Calrec Audio (Booth: C7408) will showcase its nativeIP consoles – ImPulse and Type R – along with its upgrade solutions.

Calrec’s ImPulse core is a powerful audio processing and routing engine with AES67 and SMPTE 2110 connectivity. The ImPulse core is compatible with current Apollo and Artemis control surfaces, providing a simple upgrade path for existing Calrec customers. Future scalable expansion will allow up to four DSP mix engines and control systems to run independently on a single core at the same time, providing the ability to use multiple large-format mixers simultaneously in a cost-effective and compact footprint.

ImPulse provides 3D immersive path widths and panning for next generation audio applications, and has an integral AoIP router, which fully supports NMOS discovery and connection management, as well as mDNS/Ravenna discovery.

Type R on the other hand is a modular, expandable, IP-based radio system, which utilises standard networking technology and combines it with configurable soft panels that can be tailored to operator needs. It aims to provide simple customisation across established networks, open control protocols and surface personalisation.

It has a simple 2U core with integrated I/O resources to get users up and running immediately. A single core can power up to three independent mixing environments, with no sharing of DSP resources. Combined with the flexibility of an AES67 compatible network, Type R provides enough flexibility to keep pace with radio’s changing requirements.

Meanwhile, Calrec’s H2/IP Gateway links Hydra2 to the IP domain allowing signals and control to pass in both directions. Modular I/O frames can be upgraded with a new switchable controller card that allows them to sit on either a Hydra2 or IP network, with a future option to upgrade existing fixed format boxes.
