ATC has announced the availability of the SCS70 Pro and SCS70iW Pro — inaugurating its Professional Series Subwoofer range as high-performance 12”/300mm active model variants integral to partnering with the specialist British loudspeaker drive unit and complete sound reproduction system manufacturer’s range of active studio monitors, making them ideally suited to stereo, multi-channel surround, and immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos to deliver the exceptional levels of performance demanded by audio and music professionals, with the SCS70 Pro designed for free-standing use while the SCS70iW Pro is optimised with features for flush/in-wall mounting.

Advancing ATC’s philosophy of developing products from component level upwards, the SCS70 Pro features a new sub-bass driver developed by the specialist British loudspeaker drive unit and complete sound reproduction system manufacturer’s in-house R&D (Research and Development) team that is painstakingly optimised for reproduction of the lowest four octaves of the audio band. By featuring a 30mm magnetic gap that is 50% longer than any other offered by the manufacturer in question, this long gap and short-coil configuration takes a longstanding ATC design feature to its limit, ensuring distortion is minimised while simultaneously delivering the high excursion required to generate accurate, dynamic low frequency output.

ATC R&D Manager Richard Newman, said, “Generating high magnetic flux over such a long gap required extensive FEA [Finite Element Analysis] modelling, with the resultant 6”/150mm N48M neodymium magnet representing the most powerful ever assembled by ATC — and a first for the company.” Combining to minimise distortion, the long gap and short-coil configuration also ensures that the voice coil remains surrounded by the steel motor structure — even at high drive levels, maximising cooling, reducing power compression, and improving reliability.

Newman continues: “Turbulent air noise within the driver itself was minimised via a large, flared vent running through the centre of the motor structure, which has the added benefit of increasing voice coil and motor cooling.”

Consequently, the SCS70 Pro delivers an extended low frequency response without the use of electronic equalisation — unlike most subwoofers available today, instead relying on a more elegant combination of exceptional transducer engineering and a marginal increase in cabinet volume. It is the simplicity of this approach that reduces phase shift and group delay, aiding integration of the sub with the partnering monitor loudspeakers to ultimately deliver a more balanced and coherent experience for the listener while extending the low frequency response without masking details in the upper bass/lower mid-range.

Drawing upon 34 years of experience in amplifier design and development, the SCS70 Pro’s driver is partnered with a new 300W Class AB power amplifier, hand built by ATC at its UK facility and optimised to the requirements of the drive unit to deliver fast, dynamic bass with minimal colouration. The two balanced Inputs provide connectivity for use in both stereo and multi-channel/immersive audio systems while two buffered balanced Outputs provide connection to monitor loudspeakers and/or to ‘daisy-chain’ multiple subs. The 4th order Linkwitz-Riley low-pass filters involved in the power amplifier’s crossover are analogue, and filter Frequency options ensure optimal integration with a wide range of studio monitors, including ATC’s own critically-acclaimed range, with an industry-standard 80Hz low-pass and an Off option (for use with external processing) provided. Additionally, a Pol. (Polarity) switch plus a continuously variable — 180° through to Phase adjustment allows for further subwoofer crossover optimisation and a stepped attenuator with a 21dB range provides precise level matching.

Output of the SCS70 Pro can be muted via a single latching footswitch connected via the Input ¼”/6.35mm jack; additional subs can be muted via connection to the Thru ¼”/6.35mm jack using the same single footswitch.

The SCS70 Pro’s size and performance makes it the perfect partner to ATC’s — SCM20ASL Pro, SCM25A Pro, SCM45A Pro, and SCM50ASL Pro Professional Series Monitor range. Moreover, multiple subs can be employed to elevate performance, to fill larger rooms, and also when partnering with larger active studio monitor models. It is recommended that Dolby’s DARDT (Dolby Audio Room Design Tool) should be used to aid the design of ATC monitoring systems for Dolby Atmos.

Alternatively, the SCS70iW Pro active model variant is dedicated to flush mount/in-wall applications, simplifying install, and ensuring optimal performance. Put it this way: with a shallower cabinet and recessed input connector panel, it maximises floor space while the accompanying R1-300 Pro remote-mounted 7U/19” amplifier affords the user flexibility to install the amplifier in-wall, close to the sub, in a control room rack or in a machine room. Connection between the in-wall sub and remote amp is via NL4 speaker cable and 5-pin XLR cable (sold separately and available in multiple lengths).

Whichever way anyone chooses to use ATC’s active SCS70 Pro (free-standing) or SCS70iW Pro (flush/in-wall mounting) models marking the inauguration of its Professional Series Subwoofer range, both offer the exceptional performance demanded by audio and music professionals, encouraging fast, accurate decision-making that translates into high-quality recordings, mixes, and masters.

EM Acoustics has announced the launch of the new S Series which brings all of the company’s subwoofers into a single class for ease of identification.

The new range comprises a total of seven subwoofers designed to augment EM Acoustics’ full range loudspeakers in a variety of fixed and portable sound reinforcement applications.

The baby of the range is the new S-48 low profile, compact VLF subwoofer whose minimal dimensions allow for easy concealment in confined spaces such as galleries, bars, cafés, museums and smaller theatres. Four high power 8-inch neodymium LF drive units deliver useable response down to 35Hz without the need for EQ.

At the top end of the range is the recently introduced ST-215 compact flyable touring subwoofer, which is designed to fly with EM Acoustics’ newly launched HALO-B medium format line array system. The larger ST-218 high power dual 18-inch flyable sub is designed to be matched with the large format HALO-A system.

All the subwoofers in class are prefixed with S- followed by a number (e.g. S-12, S-15, S-18) giving a clear indication of size and composition, and thus application. All S Series subwoofers come complete with a range of rigging points and an impact-resistant paint finish as standard plus custom colour and weather-resistant options.

“The introduction of the S Series will make it much easier for customers to find their way around our product offering and quickly identify what they need,” said Mike Wheeler, operations director at EM Acoustics. “The advent of S Series has been part of a targeted restructuring of our product range in order to streamline our catalogue and ensure that everything we produce is both genuinely relevant to our customers’ needs and simple to identify.

“Our subwoofer range is now versatile, varied and fully coherent,” he added. “This move is further proof that EM Acoustics is dynamic and adaptable, and I’m looking forward to presenting our new product to customers both at PLASA and in the months to come.”

EM Acoustics can be found on stand U61 at PLASA 2019, which takes place from 15-17 September at London Olympia.

ADAM Audio has announced availability of the T10S, its latest compact active 10′′ subwoofer equipped with a 130-Watt, Class D amplifier designed to extend the bass response of the company’s T Series studio monitor speakers.

Incorporating high-quality, low-noise OP amps, the T10S has been designed to offer clean, contoured bass response that maintains the sonic integrity of audio passing through the sub to the monitor speakers.

The switchable crossover frequency and optional crossover bypass allows the T10S to be used with the ADAM Audio T Series or any other professional monitor, including surround setups. Additional features include a phase invert switch and intelligent auto-power system.

Its compact dimensions give the T10S one of the smallest footprints of any 10″ subwoofer designs currently available, while its generously proportioned rear-facing bass reflex port is optimised for airflow to minimise noise, even under heavy load. The housing incorporates four high-grade rubber feet that prevent the sound from exciting the floor.

“We’re excited to take this next step for our T series range,” said Christian Hellinger, CEO at ADAM Audio. “Developing the T10S subwoofer felt a lot like the design process for our T7V and T5V full-range monitors in that were we totally focused on channeling all our experience into producing a highly affordable speaker. Many producers working on more budget-friendly setups like the T Series require an accurate depiction of how the bass will translate in clubs and other venues with a sub. This small yet potent subwoofer pushes the sonic envelope all the way down to 28 Hz. We’re very pleased to offer our customers a great- sounding subwoofer priced in line with our T series.”

The recommended retail price for the ADAM T10S is 389 GBP (incl. 20% VAT) / 449 EUR (incl. 19% VAT).

Amadeus has installed over 180 speakers in the 10,000-square meter space of the Beijing National Indoor Stadium used for ‘The Long Gone Dinosaur’ project to be opened in 2019.

The gigantic show – which features state-of-the-art technologies and plans to be open to the public for the next 15 years – has been designed for and constructed within the Beijing stadium, part of the Olympic Park constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The ‘The Long Gone Dinosaur’ show was created as an educational event for children and adults to tell the story of the rise and fall of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. It is one of the most technically advanced and largest shows ever created and includes forests, a lake, a mountain, rain, immersive sound, and life-size robot dinosaurs that move around the stadium space on a hidden rail system. In addition to the 3D ‘realistic’ indoor landscape, a massive, curved 150-meter wide by 30-meter high screen running at 12K resolution adds to the experience.

The speaker system is based on two main frontal ‘speaker antennas’ working on the WFS (Wave Field Synthesis) principles. The upper one features eight clusters, each one including four DIVA XL line array systems paired with one DIVA XL SUB. The bottom antenna features 13 clusters, each one including five DIVA XS line array systems paired with one DIVA XS SUB. The left and right side surround zones are covered by four arrays (two per side) each one including four DIVA XL line array systems paired with one DIVA XL SUB. In addition, 32 ‘UDX 15’ point source speakers are used as top surround loudspeakers.

A quantity of 12 MAESTRO II horn-loaded subwoofers is used for low-frequency effects (LFE). At the Beijing Stadium, only 12 subwoofers are paired with 2 Lab Gruppen C88:4 amplifiers offering a maximum SPL 155 dB at 25 Hz.

The show was produced by Mr. HE LiDe and his wife Mrs. HE Qin Xiaomei, who are renowned in China for creating the landscape spectacle ‘Impression Liu Sanjie’ as well as the ‘Shaolin Temple Kung Fu’ show which has toured the world for over 10 years.

Jean-Marc Harel from Paris-based Theater La Gaîté Lyrique was in charge of managing the on-site installation of the Amadeus speaker systems, in terms of rigging, safety rules, audio simulations, and calculations. Marc Piera from Paris-based Théâtre National de Chaillot was in charge of aligning the whole speaker system, using EQ and other techniques.

“Offering the audience a clear, audible and intelligible sound has been our biggest challenge, considering the high reverberation time of the venue (which is about 4.0 seconds without an audience), the large quantity of reflective surfaces, and the different types of speaker technology; including point source speakers, line array speakers, horn-loaded subwoofers,” said Piera. “We mainly worked with the dispersion properties of the speakers, rather than the EQs. Optimising the positions in the X, Y and Z axis, as well as aiming the speakers in order to minimise the reflections have been a major part of the whole system alignment.”

The graphical open-source sequencer IanniX was used to design and write spatial trajectories in a 3D space with direct manipulation of the sound and music score. The audio creation was encoded using HOLOPHONIX and then recorded on a 64-channel digital multitrack recorder/player from Tascam.

McQueen in Shoreditch has been a feature of London’s club landscape for 10 years. Themed after the late great American star, Steve McQueen, the multiple award-winning venue has an overall capacity of 650, divided between two principal spaces and a 55-cover restaurant.

Dezzi McCausland, head of design and concepts at McQueen, recently took the decision to use the occasion of the club’s 10th anniversary to relaunch it with a brand new look, choosing Pioneer Pro Audio’s XY Series speakers to address the needs of the venue’s multi-functional spaces.

Cosmic Electronics was tasked with installing the systems across the three spaces at McQueen. In the downstairs club area, which hosts promotions such as Cafe Mambo Ibiza and sets by the likes of Melon Bomb, Artful Dodger and Idris Elba, the system comprises eight XY-101 10” full range speakers with two XY-115S bass reflex subs, two XY-215S quasi-bandpass subs and two XY-2s.

Upstairs in the bar area, eight XY-81 8” full range speakers with four XY-115S bass reflex subs make up the main system, with portable XPRS 10 full range active speakers deployed as stage monitors. A further three XY-81 speakers are installed in the restaurant space adjacent to the bar area. The systems are all powered by Powersoft M and K Series amplification.

“We were blown away with the quality of the sound that the boxes produce,” said McCausland. “High quality audio is fundamental to everything that goes on at the venue – DJs and performers of the calibre that we present expect nothing less and the same is true of our patrons, whether they are eating, playing pool or enjoying a full-on club night – it has to be the best.

“Cosmic Electronics did a fantastic job. They’re super sharp and know their stuff, big time. Their team came well prepared and did a thoroughly efficient and professional job. We would definitely work with them again. Pioneer Pro Audio is a relatively young brand, but they are flying and we want to be along for the ride – we have plans to install more Pioneer Pro Audio boxes in our next venture later in the year.”

Producer, mixer and songwriter Keith Ross has recently installed a pair of Genelec 8350A Smart Active Monitors and a 7380A Smart Active Subwoofer in his personal studio.

Ross, a long-term Genelec fan based in South Florida, has worked with a number of top recording artists, including Fifth Harmony, The Roots, Pitbull, Boyz II Men, Timbaland, Enrique Iglesias, Robin Thicke, and Nelly amongst others.

“I’ve been using Genelec for over a decade – the last set I had were the 8340As and I’ve owned several previous Genelecs,” said Ross. “But this studio is the most custom room I’ve ever had; it’s a top-of-the-line build-out in a new home, so I wanted the absolute top of the line for monitoring here, and that’s the 8350As. They are amazing.”

The 8350A speakers, which were sold through Scott Katz at ScitScat Music in Miami, were installed as part of a studio design by Shane White of Legacy Acoustic Designs. “I’m not such a fan of booths,” Ross explained. “I like to be able to interact with artists as they’re recording. So we designed a section of the room for microphone placement that keeps us in the same creative space and not separated by a plate of glass.”

Customisation of his workspace is why Ross also likes Genelec’s Smart Active Monitor features, such as the proprietary Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) network and software, enabling users to build a highly flexible and reliable monitoring system. “I absolutely am taking advantage of the smart features,” said Ross. “Tuning the speakers to the room was a piece of cake because once the room curve showed up in the GLM software, I could see visually exactly which frequencies to adjust. It was so accurate that when I listened after visually compensating on the EQ, they sounded perfect.”

The first project the new Genelec 8350A monitors were used on is a single for Republic Records artist Bria Lee, joined on the track by guest artists Pitbull, a longtime collaborator of Ross’, and Fat Joe. The track, “One Shot,” was released on April 5 and is currently featured on Billboard.com as it gains traction at radio.

QSC recently provided sound for the world premiere of Avengers: Endgame on April 22 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Premiere guests enjoyed a presentation of the highly anticipated film in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos using QSC loudspeakers, amplifiers, and signal processing featuring Q-SYS in a custom-built movie theatre.

Altogether, the system used ten WideLine 10 line array loudspeakers and three WL218-sw subwoofers per screen channel, totalling thirty WideLine 10’s, and nine WL218-sw’s suspended behind the 30 by 70-foot screen. Twelve SB-7218 double 18-inch subwoofers handled the extended low frequencies of the subwoofer channel.

The overhead speakers for Dolby Atmos immersive sound required sixteen SR-5152 loudspeakers, while an additional sixteen SR-5152 loudspeakers provided coverage on the left and right sides. For rear surround reinforcement, eight hangs of WideLine 8 Series line array loudspeakers covered eight channels. Each hang was five boxes deep with a WL212-sw sub.

In total, the installation consisted of 102 loudspeakers, 29 subwoofers, and an estimated 800,000 watts of power with over half a mile of networking cable.

Jon Graves from QSC and his team set up and tuned the system over the course of six days. The result was a premium movie theatre despite the acoustic challenges of a concrete-enclosed exhibit hall. The theatre seated over 2,000 guests using temporary stadium seating for optimal viewing. Q-SYS, the company’s software-based audio, video and control ecosystem, provided the distribution and processing backbone for the installation.

The theatre used three Q-SYS Core 500i Integrated processors and two Core 1100 Enterprise processors, allowing for network redundancy. With over 50 network amplifiers, Q-SYS was used to monitor all amplifiers and audio channels.

“Everyone who attended the premiere was impressed with the superior quality of the sound and picture, which fully immersed them in the cinematic experience,” said Michael Kern, VP Special Events Production at Walt Disney Studios.
